What you seePacked stones of ox-blood and indigo pressed together on an ochre ground, with fine cream and black veins where earlier colours were squeezed thin.
What it meansBattal, or stone ebru, is the first stage of almost every marbled sheet: colour is sprinkled onto thickened water and each new drop pushes the last aside.
