A terracotta sun sits low in the left corner of a sand ground, and seven fine black orbits sweep out from it across the frame. Planets of different sizes ride the orbits, one ringed, one with a small moon on a dotted path.OrreryNo. 5
Two round chart plates on a charcoal ground, the northern sky and the southern, each centred on its pole and ruled with rim ticks, hour spokes, dashed circles and the ecliptic in a dashed terracotta line. The star figures sit at their true positions, joined in fine bone line: the Plough, the Little Bear, Cassiopeia, Cygnus, Lyra and the Pleiades on the northern plate; Orion, Canis Major, Scorpius, Sagittarius and the Southern Cross on the southern. Aldebaran and Antares are marked in terracotta. Two HemispheresNo. 6
A bright head ringed in gold sits in the upper right of a deep navy ground, and its tail of many fine curved lines in gold, cream and slate fans down to the lower left corner. Small stars fill the sky.CometNo. 7
Eight flat bands of plum, mauve, rose and peach narrow towards the horizon, where a cream half-sun sits on dark plum water. Bars of cream and peach, shrinking as they go, carry its reflection down the page.Banded SunriseNo. 8
A gold disc with a ring of thirty-two short rays sits on a cream ground, with a midnight crescent below it, or beside it on the wide sheets, its curved edge turned towards the sun.Sun and MoonNo. 9
A sky runs from midnight blue at the top through violet to a soft pink glow above low dark hills. A cream crescent lies like a shallow bowl in the upper right, its lit edge turned down towards the sun that has just set; small stars thin out as the sky lightens, and along the horizon a row of slim cypresses and one small minaret stand black against the last light.NightfallNo. 10
An armillary sphere in sand-coloured line on terracotta: a double meridian ring, a broad horizon ring, the equator and the two tropics, a ticked ecliptic band and the two colures around a rust bead, with the polar axis running through, on a slim turned stand. The rings at the back are drawn fainter, so the sphere reads in depth.ArmillaryNo. 11
A round planet striped in mauve, rose, peach and plum sits in the middle of a deep plum ground, with three tilted rings passing behind it and in front. A small peach moon and faint stars fill the corners.Ringed PlanetNo. 12
