What you seeAn engraved star-atlas plate of Ursa Major on a night-blue ground, with a fine coordinate grid, a chequered border and Dubhe picked out in gold.
What it meansFrom zahr al-dubb al-akbar, 'the back of the great bear'. The modern name keeps only dubb, 'bear', from the Arabic rendering of Ptolemy's description.
Where it worksThe familiar shape of the Plough makes it a good first star chart for a family room.
