Gilded Cartouche
What you seeAn elaborate gilded frame with a beaded channel, corner rosettes, acanthus and a shell crest, set around an empty field of deep emerald.
What it meansThe cartouche began as a scrolled frame for an inscription and became a favourite of Baroque and Rococo decorators, who often left it as pure ornament.
Where it worksHolds its own over a fireplace or console, where the empty field reads as a calm pause in a rich room.
