Reading Stand
What you seeA carved wooden reading stand, its two broad boards crossed and opened into a cradle, stands empty on a low rug in warm lamplight, a string of prayer beads hung from a peg above. A lilac plane stands beside it and a magenta band runs along the wall.
What it meansThe rahl is a folding stand, traditionally cut from a single board so that its two halves interlock, made to hold a Quran off the floor while it is read; the boards are often pierced with stars and arches.
Where it worksQuiet and devotional, for a reading corner, a study or a prayer corner.
