Shadow Square
What you seeThe back of an astrolabe drawn in brass lines on lapis, with its degree scales, a sine grid, hour arcs, the shadow square and a sighting alidade.
What it meansAimed at the sun or a star, the alidade measured altitude, and the shadow square turned such readings into the heights of buildings and mountains.
Where it worksSits well in an office or a room with dark walls.
