Alcove
What you seeA tall, round-headed niche is set into a plaster-coloured sheet. Inside it the wall is a shade darker, with a deeper shadow curving round the arch and down the left side, and a thin pale sill runs beneath it.
What it meansThe niche is architecture's way of making room for nothing: a space kept empty on purpose.
Where it worksFor a hallway, a landing or beside a bed, where a real alcove would be welcome.
