Andalusian Tiles
What you seeA panel of glazed tiles set with fine grout lines. Two designs alternate like a chequerboard: a cobalt eight-point star on white, and a white lozenge on cobalt. Where four tiles meet, their corners make a teal and saffron roundel.
What it meansCuerda seca, the 'dry cord' technique, kept each glaze apart with a greasy line, and was used on tiles in Andalusia and North Africa for centuries. The corner roundels only appear when the tiles are laid together.
Where it worksCrisp, colourful and ordered; for a kitchen, bathroom or stairwell, and a natural partner for the Zellige prints.
