What you seeA pointed window filled with a mashrabiya screen of turned wooden beads on a diagonal lattice, glowing with the saffron light of late afternoon. On the pale sill below stand a clay pot of basil and a small brass jug.

What it meansMashrabiya screens let breeze and soft light into the house while keeping it private and cool; the turned-wood lattice is one of the great crafts of Cairo and the Hijaz.

Where it worksWarm light and fine pattern; for a bedroom, a study or a landing with a real window nearby.
