Astrolabe
What you seeA brass astrolabe hangs from its throne and ring against a deep blue ground; the rim is graduated in fine ticks, the plate engraved with circles of altitude that close in towards the zenith, and the openwork rete above it carries the ecliptic ring, twelve star pointers and a long rule.
What it meansThe astrolabe maps the sky onto a flat plate; astronomers in the Islamic world refined it for timekeeping, finding the direction of prayer and surveying.
Where it worksA precise, quiet piece for a study, an office or a child’s room.
