What you seeA round-arched window in a warm cream wall looks down a long garden pool, between clipped hedges and rows of cypress, to a small arcaded pavilion. On the sill a glass bell jar covers a young seedling.

What it meansThe long pool lined with fountain jets and cypresses recalls the water gardens of al-Andalus, such as the Generalife above Granada. Glass bell jars, or cloches, have been used by gardeners for centuries to keep young plants warm.

Where it worksA quiet, hopeful print for a study, a kitchen or a garden room.
