What you seeAn Ottoman mosque in elevation: a lead-grey central dome carried down through half-domes and smaller domes, framed by pencil minarets against a low peach sun.

What it meansOttoman builders stepped their domes in tiers so that the weight of the central dome passes through half-domes and buttresses to the ground, producing the cascading skyline associated with Istanbul.

Where it worksSuits a living room or hallway where a calm, symmetrical image can anchor a wall.
