What you seeTwo rugs crossing at right angles over a third: a striped madder kilim of diamonds laid across an indigo rug of Memling guls with a running hook border.
What it meansKilims are flatwoven, with no pile, so their bands of triangles and diamonds sit sharp and flat. The hooked octagon is called a Memling gul, after the fifteenth-century Flemish painter Hans Memling, who painted rugs that carry it.
