What you seeA twisting stack of black and indigo rugs turned a little more at each layer, with fields of latch hooks, crosses and small sprigs.
What it meansIndigo was the great blue of carpet weaving, dyed from the indigo plant in vats where the wool turns blue only as it meets the air. The soft bands of shade across each field echo abrash, the natural shift in colour between batches of wool dyed with madder or indigo.
