Turkmen Red
What you seeThree red runners side by side on a dark floor, each covered in rows of quartered guls and framed in narrow borders of stars and diamonds.
What it meansThe gul, a stepped octagon split into quarters, is the emblem of Turkmen weaving; each tribe once kept its own. Turkmen weavers favoured deep madder reds, which is why their rugs are so often simply called red.
Where it worksGraphic and warm for a long wall, a hallway or a dining room.
