Ivory Ground
What you seeA cascade of rugs led by an ivory rug of Memling guls with a carnation border, over madder and indigo rugs of stars, lattice and boteh.
What it meansThe hooked octagon is called a Memling gul, after the fifteenth-century Flemish painter Hans Memling, who painted rugs that carry it. Ivory grounds come from undyed wool, which lets the reds and blues sit brighter.
Where it worksLighter and fresh for a living room, a dining room or a hallway.
