First Sighting
What you seeA thin new crescent low over a line of dunes at dusk. The sky runs from midnight blue down through plum to a rose glow where the sun has just set, with a single bright star above.
What it meansRamadan begins when the new crescent, the hilal, is sighted after sunset at the end of the previous month, so families and communities watch the western sky on that evening.
Where it worksQuiet enough for a bedroom or a hallway, and right for the first evening of the month.
