What you seeFive rugs fanned out from the foot of the frame in madder, crimson and deep madder, with fields of stars, small crosses and sprigs.

What it meansMadder root gave weavers their reds, from rose to deep brick, depending on the mordant and how long the wool stayed in the dye. The soft bands of shade across each field echo abrash, the natural shift in colour between batches of wool dyed with madder or indigo.

Where it worksWarm and lively for a living room or a dining room.
