Muqarnas
What you seeA pointed niche in ink and gold whose hood is filled with tiers of muqarnas cells, each a small pointed niche with a lit and a shaded half. Every tier has its cells offset by half a cell from the tier below and steps inward to the apex, above a fluted wall.
What it meansMuqarnas is the honeycomb vaulting of Islamic architecture, built from small niche-like cells arranged in tiers so that each tier corbels out over the one below. It softens the transition from a wall to a dome or a vault.
Where it worksA striking dark plate for a living room or a stairwell.
