New Moon
What you seeA large crescent torn from clay-coloured paper hangs in a moss field that is itself torn across a bone sheet, with a thin sand strip at its foot. A small torn bone circle sits in the open side of the crescent, and a soft shadow lifts the clay off the page.
What it meansThe hilal, the first thin crescent after the new moon, marks the start of each month in the lunar calendar and is watched for at the beginning and end of Ramadan. Here it is made the way the rest of the series is made, from torn paper shapes.
Where it worksMade for a large wall in a living room or entrance, and a meaningful gift for Ramadan, Eid or a new home.
