What you seeFour brick panels on saffron, each labelled: basket weave of paired bricks, herringbone with diagonal bands of green glazed brick, and two banna'i walls in running bond whose blue and green glazed bricks trace lozenges and chevrons.

What it meansHazarbaf, Persian for a thousand weaves, is brickwork that becomes ornament through the way the bricks are laid, as on Seljuk minarets and tomb towers. Banna'i, the builder's technique, adds glazed bricks to the bond to draw patterns and even inscriptions across a wall.

Where it worksA warm, tactile plate for a hallway, a kitchen or an architect's office.
