What you seeA field of eight-fold star pattern on terracotta: cream straps weave over and under round large sand stars, each filled with a finer pattern of small navy stars and dark four-pointed stars, among green and navy shapes.
What it meansIslamic designers sometimes set a pattern inside another of the same family at a smaller scale, so that the eye finds stars within stars. Here both levels come from one grid of octagons and squares, the smaller three times finer than the larger.
