Hem
What you seeThe bottom of a dress on indigo. The upper field is powdered with small motifs, then the hem gathers its borders at once in teeth, stars, hooks, cypresses and diamonds, in madder, gold, rose and olive.
What it meansThe hem is one of the main embroidered areas of the Palestinian thobe, alongside the chest panel and sleeves. Tatreez, the cross-stitch traditionally worked by women, often grows dense there as borders stack together.
Where it worksMost of the sheet stays quiet so the richly worked band at the bottom carries the weight, the way a dress does. A dark, elegant piece for a large wall.
