One Star
What you seeA single eight-point star in madder red on undyed linen cream. Every stitch is enlarged into a bold square tile with its cross cut into it, and the counted holes of the linen show between.
What it meansTatreez is Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery, traditionally worked by women on the thobe, the long embroidered dress, with motifs and colours that vary from region to region. The eight-point star is one of its most widespread motifs, built from petals on the axes and on the diagonals.
Where it worksOne motif at poster scale, so the logic of the stitch becomes the whole image. A quiet, graphic piece in two reds and cream that holds a wall on its own.
