Star of Stars
What you seeOne eight-point star enlarged until each of its stitches holds a small star of its own. Madder sits at the edges, indigo within and gold at the heart, with a single stitch marking every empty cell of the linen.
What it meansTatreez is Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery, traditionally worked by women on the thobe, the long embroidered dress, with motifs and colours that vary from region to region. The eight-point star is one of its most widespread motifs, repeated at many scales across a single dress.
Where it worksA play on scale in which a motif is made of itself. From a distance it is one star; up close it is dozens.
