Sleeves
What you seeThree long sleeve panels side by side on a deep aubergine ground. Each is a column of stars, diamonds and cypresses between ruled edges, worked in its own order of rose, gold, cream and sage.
What it meansSleeves are one of the main embroidered areas of the Palestinian thobe, alongside the chest panel, side panels and hem. Tatreez, the cross-stitch traditionally worked by women, often runs down them in long vertical columns.
Where it worksTall columns give the piece a vertical rhythm that suits narrow walls and stairwells. The dark aubergine ground lets the lighter threads glow.
