Madder Pile
What you seeFive village rugs heaped on a dark floor, a crimson rug of quartered guls on top over rugs of stars, latch hooks and small sprigs in rust and indigo.
What it meansThe gul, a stepped octagon split into quarters, is the emblem of Turkmen weaving; each tribe once kept its own. In carpet bazaars rugs are kept in deep piles and turned back one by one for a visitor, so a stack is how most people first meet them.
Where it worksRich and warm for a living room or above a sofa.
