What you seeA slim black minaret rising the full height of the sheet against a starry indigo sky. Its shaft windows glow amber, lanterns hang beneath each of its two railed balconies, a small lit storey and onion cap close it and a gold crescent finial tops it, with a large crescent moon in the sky beside it.

What it meansIn many old cities lamps were hung on minarets through the nights of Ramadan. The minaret here is invented, so it stands for all of them.

Where it worksA tall, elegant vertical for a narrow wall or a landing, and a strong seasonal piece that stays up all year.

Three fanous lanterns hung side by side on indigo, a hexagonal, a tall and a round-bellied one, each wrapped in a soft radial glow of its own and lit amber behind its brass.Three FanousNo. 16
A round brass lantern hung on a long chain in front of a large new crescent. The lantern's amber and the moon's pale gold overlap in one soft halo, and stars fill the indigo around them.Moon LanternNo. 17
A single tall cream candle standing in a dark room, its flame lit and its glow the only warmth on an almost black indigo ground.Last LightNo. 18
A great brass ring hangs low beneath a dark dome on chains that meet at its crown, carrying a circle of small glass oil lamps, each with its own flame; the far side of the ring glows dimmer, and the light pools on rows of carpet below. The Lamp RingNo. 19
A wooden oriel window of turned lattice juts out from a dark stone wall at night on stepped corbels under a crested hood. Lamplight from inside shows through every opening of the lattice, so the wood stands out dark against the gold, and the glow spreads over the stones around it.The OrielNo. 20
A single large fanous lantern hung from a hook inside a pointed plaster niche. Its windows glow amber, and the star-and-dot pattern cut into its brass is thrown onto the wall around the niche as a grid of light that bows outward and fades into the dark at the edges. The FanousNo. 1
A lantern shop after dark: hexagonal, tall and round-bellied lanterns hung from the ceiling on chains at every height, shoulder to shoulder, each glowing amber against a deep plum ground.Lantern ShopNo. 2
