What you seeA lantern shop after dark: hexagonal, tall and round-bellied lanterns hung from the ceiling on chains at every height, shoulder to shoulder, each glowing amber against a deep plum ground.
What it meansIn the weeks before Ramadan the lantern sellers hang their whole stock from the ceiling and light it, and the street outside turns gold. Choosing the year's fanous is a small ceremony of its own.
Where it worksDense, warm and festive, with no empty corner. For a living room or a wide wall where you want the month to feel like a market at night.
