Arcade at Night

No. 4 of 20 · free · 300 dpi

What you seeA long arcade of horseshoe arches seen straight down its length to a lit doorway at the far end. A lantern hangs from the crown of every other arch and throws a pool of light on the stone floor, the arches growing smaller and darker into the distance.

What it meansCovered arcades run round courtyards from Córdoba to Cairo, and at night they were lit by lamps hung from the crown of each arch. Walking one is walking from light to light.

Where it worksDeep perspective and a single vanishing point give a small wall real depth. For a long hallway or the end of a corridor.

One cream candle standing on the sill of a pointed niche in a lime-washed wall. The niche is warm gold with the flame, and the glow softens the grey plaster around it and fades to shadow at the edges.Candle NicheNo. 5
A straight path at night, lined on both sides by lanterns on posts that grow larger as they come towards you. At the far end a dome and two slender minarets stand black against the indigo sky, with a crescent and stars above.Lantern PathNo. 6
A pointed window in a plum room at night. On the sill a round brass lantern burns beside a small dish of dates, and through the glass are the indigo sky, a crescent, a few stars and the dark shape of a dome with its gold finial.Lamp in the WindowNo. 7
Lanterns hung on a line above dark still water at night. Each lantern glows amber and its reflection lies below as a column of broken gold ripples, with a few stars in the sky above.Lanterns over WaterNo. 8
Hexagonal pierced lanterns hung in staggered rows on indigo, each with a small roof, ring and finial. Three patterns of piercing alternate, eight-point stars, a grid of dots and rings of small sparks, each lantern lit amber behind its brass and hung on its own thin rod.Pierced LanternsNo. 9
A tall façade of horseshoe-arched windows in tight rows. Roughly half are lit, each showing a faint lattice of stars behind the glass, and the rest are dark indigo, so the lit windows scatter over the wall like a chart of stars.Lit FaçadeNo. 10
Fanous standing on their feet in a row along a dark wooden ledge: hexagonal, tall and round-bellied, from knee-high to the small tin ones children carry. Their windows make one line of light across a plum dark room, and each throws a soft ring onto the shelf.Lamp RowNo. 11
A narrow alley between tall walls, looking down its length to a small lit doorway at the far end. Four strings of lanterns cross overhead, growing smaller with distance; lit windows and two wooden doors line the walls, and a strip of indigo sky holds the crescent. The AlleyNo. 12
