Lanterns over Water

No. 8 of 20 · free · 300 dpi

What you seeLanterns hung on a line above dark still water at night. Each lantern glows amber and its reflection lies below as a column of broken gold ripples, with a few stars in the sky above.

What it meansCourtyards and gardens with a pool at their centre double every light hung above them. The reflection is the second gift of the lantern.

Where it worksSymmetry above and below gives the print a settled calm. For a bathroom, a bedroom or above a low sideboard.

A tall façade of horseshoe-arched windows in tight rows. Roughly half are lit, each showing a faint lattice of stars behind the glass, and the rest are dark indigo, so the lit windows scatter over the wall like a chart of stars.Lit FaçadeNo. 10
Fanous standing on their feet in a row along a dark wooden ledge: hexagonal, tall and round-bellied, from knee-high to the small tin ones children carry. Their windows make one line of light across a plum dark room, and each throws a soft ring onto the shelf.Lamp RowNo. 11
A narrow alley between tall walls, looking down its length to a small lit doorway at the far end. Four strings of lanterns cross overhead, growing smaller with distance; lit windows and two wooden doors line the walls, and a strip of indigo sky holds the crescent. The AlleyNo. 12
Small fanous lanterns drawn in gold line on deep indigo in a half-drop repeat, hexagonal, tall and round-bellied in turn, each hung on its own thin rod with an amber flame in its window.Fanous RepeatNo. 13
A slim black minaret rising the full height of the sheet against a starry indigo sky. Its shaft windows glow amber, lanterns hang beneath each of its two railed balconies, a small lit storey and onion cap close it and a gold crescent finial tops it, with a large crescent moon in the sky beside it.Minaret LightsNo. 14
A pointed doorway in a lime-washed wall, one studded blue leaf of its door swung open. Amber light floods out from inside and down three stone steps, and a brass lantern hangs lit above the point of the arch.Doorway GlowNo. 15
Three fanous lanterns hung side by side on indigo, a hexagonal, a tall and a round-bellied one, each wrapped in a soft radial glow of its own and lit amber behind its brass.Three FanousNo. 16
