Cypress Arches

What you seeA wall of clipped cypress hedge, dark and close-grown, cut with tall round arches. Through them a lower garden shows with a pool, more cypresses and a red palace wall under a pale sky, and the light from the arches falls on a sand path with a narrow cobalt rill.

What it meansIn the hillside gardens of Granada, cypress is clipped into tall walls and arcades, so that the garden is built from living green in the same shapes as the stone architecture around it.

Where it worksDeep, quiet green with light coming through. For a hallway, a bedroom or a dark corner that wants a view.
