Fourfold Garden
What you seeA garden plan: a walled rectangle divided into four quarters by two cobalt water channels that meet at an eight-point star pool. Each quarter is planted with a grid of round trees carrying oranges or roses, paths run round them in sand, and small round basins sit in the corners.
What it meansThe fourfold garden, divided by four streams, is the oldest plan in Islamic garden design and an image of paradise; it was laid out from Persia to Spain, and its geometry survives in courtyards everywhere.
Where it worksOrdered, symmetrical and quietly meaningful. For a study, a hallway or a prayer corner.
