The Alley
What you seeA narrow alley between tall walls, looking down its length to a small lit doorway at the far end. Four strings of lanterns cross overhead, growing smaller with distance; lit windows and two wooden doors line the walls, and a strip of indigo sky holds the crescent.
What it meansThe lanes of the old cities are so narrow that neighbours can string lanterns from wall to wall, and in Ramadan they do. The lit door at the end is where you are going.
Where it worksTall, deep and full of atmosphere. For a narrow wall, a stairwell or beside a front door.
