The Long Rill
What you seeA garden walk seen straight down its length. A narrow cobalt-edged rill runs from the foreground to a pavilion arch in a sand-coloured wall, with low myrtle hedges on either side, thin water jets arching over the channel and a row of dark cypresses rising from the garden behind against the pale sky.
What it meansThe long rill with hedges and jets is the spine of the Andalusian garden, laid out so the sound and sight of water lead the eye and the walker to the shade at the end.
Where it worksOne strong line of perspective makes a small room feel longer. For a hallway, a landing or the wall facing a doorway.
