The Lunar Month

What you seeA ring of thirty small moons on ink, from the thin crescent of day one through full moon to the last crescent, with day thirty shown as a dashed circle. Inside, the twelve hijri months in Arabic around a gold crescent, with Ramadan in gold. In tall and wide shapes the months are listed beside the ring.

What it meansThe hijri calendar follows the moon. Each month begins when the new crescent, the hilal, is seen after sunset, and lasts twenty-nine or thirty days, so the year is about eleven days shorter than the solar year. The phases are drawn as seen from the northern hemisphere.
