Symmetry
What you seeA six-fold pattern of hexagrams and hexagons, with one region marked to show its symmetry: dashed mirror lines, centres of six-, three- and two-fold rotation, and a gold triangle that is the smallest repeating unit, with a small legend below.
What it meansEvery repeating flat pattern belongs to one of seventeen symmetry groups. Many Islamic star patterns use the richest of them, with mirrors and six-fold turns, so that a single small triangle generates the whole design.
Where it worksA thoughtful plate for a study, an office or a maths-loving child's room.
