Mashrabiya
What you seeA turned-wood mashrabiya screen in warm brown: beaded lathe-turned spindles meeting at round turned knobs, held in a stepped moulded frame, with a solid inset panel at its centre pierced by an eight-pointed star filled with small turned spokes, all against soft light.
What it meansMashrabiya is the projecting window screen of turned wood found across Cairo, the Hijaz and the Levant. Its lattice shades the room, lets air pass and allows people inside to look out without being seen.
Where it worksSuits a hallway, a landing or a room that faces the light.
