What you seeGeometric borders stacked down an emerald sheet. Chevrons, eight-point stars, small arches, lozenges, crescents and dots each run the full width in gold.

What it meansBorders frame almost everything in Islamic decoration, from manuscript pages to doorways. Laid out together they become a sampler of the patterns that recur through the season's decorations.

Where it worksRich but orderly, with the feel of a page of pattern samples. Two flat colours keep it crisp.
