Moon Phases

No. 5 of 50 · free · 300 dpi

What you seeCobalt tiles on cream, each holding the moon in a different phase, from a thin new crescent through to the last; where the full moon should be there is a mustard eight-point star.

What it meansThe new crescent, the hilal, marks the start of each month in the Islamic calendar, and the moon's phases have long measured the year. The star stands in for the full moon as the one break in the sequence.

Where it worksQuiet and spare, it suits a bedroom, a long narrow wall or above a bed.
