Proportion
What you seeA diagram in gold and bone on ink: a column of five rhombic dots, a naskh alif of the same height standing as the diameter of a circle, and a reed pen whose cut nib rests on the top dot.
What it meansThe tenth-century vizier and calligrapher Ibn Muqla is credited with the proportioned script, al-khatt al-mansub. The dot made by the pen sets the measure of the alif, and the alif sets the circle within which the other letters are proportioned. Five dots is a height often taught for Naskh; other scripts use more.
Where it worksA quiet, thoughtful plate for a studio, a library or a calligrapher's desk.
