Lustreware
What you seeA white-glazed dish painted in golden lustre: a palmette tree in reserve at the centre against a ground of dotted rings, a lustre band of dotted rings set with four lobed white panels and leaf shapes, and a rim of short strokes. Beside it an eight-pointed star tile with a reserved spiral scroll and a turquoise edge.
What it meansLustre is made by painting silver and copper compounds onto a glazed pot and firing it again in a smoky kiln, leaving a thin metallic film. The technique spread from Abbasid Iraq to Egypt, Syria and Iran, where Kashan made lustre tiles in the shape of stars and crosses.
Where it worksA warm, glowing plate for a kitchen, a dining room or a hallway.
