What you seeSix tools laid out and labelled: a reed pen with its cut nib, a narrow pen knife, a magnified view of the nib's slit and oblique cut, a lidded brass inkwell, an agate burnisher and a mistar, a card strung with cords for ruling lines.

What it meansArabic calligraphers write with a qalam cut from reed, trimmed with a knife so that its slit and slanted nib suit the script. The paper is polished with a burnisher to let the pen glide, and lines are pressed in with a mistar so the writing sits evenly.

Where it worksA quiet, studious plate for a study, a desk or a calligrapher's wall.
