Nastaliq
What you seeA Persian couplet in cream Nastaliq on deep aubergine, the two lines staggered as in a calligrapher's panel, with gold rules, gold corner pieces and a gold medallion between the lines in the taller shapes.
What it meansNastaliq, the hanging script, was developed in Iran in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries for Persian poetry, and its sloping words seem to sit on a descending line. The couplet is from Sa'di's Gulistan: the children of Adam are limbs of one another, for in creation they are of one essence. It is set in the Noto Nastaliq Urdu typeface.
Where it worksA warm, poetic piece for a living room, a study or a bedroom.
