What you seeA glass mosque lamp hanging on three chains against a warm glow: a wide flaring neck banded in blue enamel with a white scroll and red and green palmettes, a rounded body with three visible loop handles and a band of roundels, and a high foot, all edged in gold.

What it meansMamluk glassmakers in Egypt and Syria decorated lamps with coloured enamels and gilding. A small vessel of oil with a floating wick was set inside, and the lamps were hung by chains from their handles so the light shone through the painted glass.

Where it worksA luminous plate for a dark wall, a hallway or a prayer space.
