Mamluk Brass
What you seeA large roundel from an inlaid brass basin: a whirling rosette at the centre, a ring of silver scrolls, and a broad band of silver Arabic inscription on black, broken by two small whirl medallions. Beside it the basin itself in elevation, with its inscription band and roundels.
What it meansMetalworkers in Mamluk Egypt and Syria inlaid brass with silver, gold and copper, filling the background with a black paste so the decoration stood out. Basins often carried the titles of a sultan or amir; the band here reads 'Glory to our lord the sultan, the king, the learned, the just', a standard formula.
Where it worksA rich, gleaming plate for a dining room or a study.
