Star and Cross
What you seeA field of cream eight-pointed star tiles, each centred with a lapis or red star and an ochre octagon, interlocking with deep green crosses that carry four small ochre dots, all within dark joints on warm saffron.
What it meansStar and cross tiles, made at Kashan in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and often painted in lustre, were laid in broad dados in shrines and palaces. The star is two squares overlapped, and the cross is the shape left between four stars.
Where it worksA warm, rhythmic plate for a kitchen, a hallway or a dining room.
