Octagon and Square
What you seeA tiling of deep green octagons and brown squares on pale sage, each octagon set with a gold eight-pointed star and each square with a smaller square, with one corner opened out in a roundel to show its angles of 135, 135 and 90 degrees.
What it meansOnly three regular polygons tile the plane on their own, and eight mixtures of them, the semiregular tilings, do the same. The octagon and square is one of these, and it is the hidden grid of many eight-fold tile and zellige patterns.
