What you seeFour marbled sheets on cream paper, labelled: battal, a ground of scattered drops; gelgit, the same drops drawn back and forth; taraklı, combed into fine waves; and çiçek, a red flower with a stem and leaves drawn on a pale ground.

What it meansIn ebru, colours mixed with ox gall are sprinkled onto a size of water thickened with gum tragacanth, shaped with styluses and combs, and printed by laying paper on the surface. Ottoman binders used marbled papers for endpapers and the borders of calligraphy.

Where it worksA soft, lively plate for a study, a bedroom or a craft room.
