What you seeA field of ten-fold girih on deep lapis: broad gold straps weave over and under through a large pattern of ten-pointed stars, and each large star is filled with the same kind of pattern at a third of the scale, in sky blue, clay and bone line.

What it meansThe tile panels of the Darb-i Imam shrine in Isfahan carry girih patterns at two scales, a large pattern whose spaces are filled with a smaller one, and historians of science have studied them as an early example of self-similar design. The drawing shows the idea rather than copying a panel.

Where it worksA deep, intricate plate for a library, a study or a dining room.
